It is hard to explain the experience I had as a School Coaching Officer- fun, challenging, and life changing is just a start.  I can assure anyone who pursues the SCO or LDO position that it will have a positive impact on your life for any career path you choose.

It was an interesting transition for me personally – I started as a collegiate coach then moved to England’s youth and high school coaching.  Despite the difference in competition level, I can honestly say I learned as much as an SCO as I did within the NCAA.  I was thrilled with the opportunity to learn about the game from an international perspective and was able to do so within England’s school leagues, county honor leagues, and British National U19 competitions.

At Rendcomb, I benefitted from a great deal of independence coupled with high level responsibility to design curriculums, run practices, and provide individual training for motivated individuals.  It was rewarding to feel a new vigor among the students once they experienced competitive culture and found success with their skills.  The students absolutely respond to enthusiasm and will pay-it-back tenfold to coaches who engage in their team development.

Serving as tutor, teacher, and live-in advisor added to my role as an SCO.  I enjoyed the comprehensive perspective I gained regarding education administration, teaching, and mentoring as an assistant residence director.  There are many ways to include additional responsibilities to the SCO position - ranging from organizing independent lacrosse clinics, playing in post-graduate leagues, to getting more involved with your specific school.  I was able to explore my career interests, contribute to students and faculty, and garner an advanced understanding of international cultures through my SCO position.  I learned so much about life, lacrosse, and working with people it’s hard to believe this whole experience happened in just one year.  I miss it greatly.
