Local Development Officer

The Position – Overview:
Local Development Officers work in a club recreation programme and coach courses at local schools. The club will provide participants of the LDO programme with lodging, car, petrol allowance, weekly pay, mobile phone and will grant one day off per week.  Term of stay in UK: End of August to beginning of April (exact dates may vary).

English Lacrosse will provide successful candidates with a Work Permit from the Department of Employment.  Thereafter, American participants are required to obtain a Work Visa (aka Leave to Enter) from the British Consulate (instructions are provided by English Lacrosse, approx. cost $420) and purchase roundtrip airfare to the UK.   English Lacrosse provides detailed instructions on how to obtain your visa.  Unfortunately the costs of the Work Visa and airfare cannot be reimbursed by English Lacrosse.

Living and Working here:
LDOs are interviewed by English Lacrosse on behalf of the participating clubs.  These clubs, which host recreation programmes ranging from U12 to senior squads, are located throughout the UK with concentrations around the Manchester (North West) and London areas.  The club system is unique to England and Australia - it is similar to a recreation programme in the USA, only the club has an actual club house and is generally home to several sports teams, such as field hockey, cricket, football (soccer), etc.  At the club, the LDO is responsible for helping to grow and maintain the junior programme, coaching select junior squads, supporting the Pop and LAX initiatives and refereeing games.  The participant is eligible to play for the club’s senior squad (ages range from 16+ to fully experienced adult players) and is encouraged to help coach at this level.  Outside of the club, the LDO will teach lacrosse courses at local schools in an effort to broaden the knowledge of lacrosse and recruit junior club members.  In both the club and school venues, the LDO is responsible for planning sessions, arranging fixtures and delivering Physical Education curriculums.   The club will provide the LDO with a weekly work schedule and an outline of tasks including school requirements, club sessions, work for other clubs and total number of teaching hours.  English Lacrosse will hold induction courses at the beginning of the employment period to give the LDOs the necessary information and skills to execute their responsibilities. The Induction course will include: a coaching award course; child protection information; individual interviews about each LDO's individual position; officiating information, information about the education system, and summary of lacrosse in England.   An English Lacrosse officer will be available to assess the programme and assist with programme maintenance and troubleshooting.  Participants are expected to bring their lacrosse equipment and appropriate clothing for coaching outdoors. 

Induction Course Dates (3 days):

  • Last few days in August to early Sept
  • LDO'S should plan to arrive in the U.K a few days prior.

LDOs are entitled to one complete day off per week.  Holidays are granted only by agreement with English Lacrosse and club at half terms (holiday/vacations) and Christmas.

Accommodation is provided by the club.  Living situations vary based on the club’s situation, but tend to be either furnished flats or homestay with a club-affiliated family.  The club will provide a weekly payment to the LDO of no less than £130.00 (£145.00 in Greater London) per week and participants are eligible for a bonus of £225.00 at the end of the contract subject to satisfactory performance.  A car in satisfactory working order (covered by breakdown assistance) is provided by the club and reimbursement for expenditure on petrol whilst delivering the programme is available.  All participants will be required to drive to and from their sessions and therefore must have a valid international driver’s license.  Mobile phones are provided to the participants for the duration of their employment.  LDOs will be covered by the British National Insurance healthcare scheme while living and working in the UK.

Eligibility:

Applicants must have played four years at the collegiate level and at least 50% of the games in their fourth year of lacrosse. Injuries can be taken into account with a doctors note and supporting statistics from the previous year. Should 50% of the games not be met in the fourth year of play for any reason other than injury, the applicant will no longer be eligible for employment, even if a position is offered prior to the end of the season. DIV I, II, III and club program participants are eligible, but must support their play with statistics (either substaniated online or through a coach/statistician from the program). Despite coaching experience, we cannot accept participants that do not meet the aforementioned playing criteria.

Telephone interviews are available for those living far from these sites, but we strongly encourage applicants to arrange a face-to-face whenever possible.  All applicants will have to provide the following supporting documents after the initial application is filed:

  • Resume* - *to be submitted with application form
  • Copy of valid driver’s license
  • Copy of valid passport
  • Adult and Child CPR certificate
  • State police or national background check for people working with children
  • Record of playing statistics
  • 2 personal/professional references – at least 1 lacrosse-related (to be followed up by English Lacrosse)
